I figured I would post about my experience at the 2016 ISSN conference, being that I will be continuing my global education in France this year. This past week I had the amazing opportunity to attend the first ever ISSN summer design camp for High School students hosted by the Jackson Academy for Global Studies (at Jackson High School). This was a completely student run camp with the supervision of our educators. The camp consisted of 11, 10th-12th graders representing schools from Huston, Texas, Cincinnati, Ohio and Canton, Ohio. Never have I ever worked with such a passionate group, the amount of time and dedication we put into our project as a team is incredible. During the 4 days we were together, we were presented with a question- what can we do, based on our knowledge we already have about the world, to make a positive impact? We decided to focus our efforts on sustainability, so we came up with a social network to connect, unite and change the world around us. Our goal is to improve sustainability in our communities (nationally &internationally) one connection at a time. We called this network ‘CU4C,’ which stands for Connected. United. For Change. As of right now, we currently have a Twitter and Facebook account that we are using to share our accomplishments and give news updates. We have already been presented with amazing networking opportunities through the educators and leaders we met at the conference this weekend. We plan to work with other schools as well to collaborate and enrich our global understanding. As high school students, we appreciate the opportunities our principals and teachers give us to change the world. Our first goal with our network is to raise enough funds to provide a small town, Bumpe, in Sierra Leone with solar panels to use as a sustainable form of energy for electric generators. But we won’t stop there! We hope that our network continues to grow and empower future generations of students (k-12th grade) so we can help others in several parts of the world, one connection at a time.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned this week was, “If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” We had encountered a few minor setbacks during our time together, but when we teamed up, nothing could stop us. Our voices are the change we wish to see in the world. Go UC4C!

P.S. CONGRATS CAVS! The Cleveland Cavaliers won the 2016 NBA finals this week and we just happened to be in the city during the time of the parade 😉
